Gainesville Moms

A place for moms to connect

Dear Moms,

My son will turn 5 this July. He is currently in VPK and we are looking forward to admit him in a public school for his kindergarten. We are planning to shift our residence closer to the school we choose. He has a genetic disorder that needs close monitoring of his blood sugar. We need to be very close to the school to be able to reach the school quickly in the event of an emergency.

My problem is in choosing a school. He doesn't have any learning or physical disability. But he needs a nurse's presence and good, caring teachers. We are our relatively new to Gainesville. I would like your help in choosing a school. Can you provide me with a list of good schools so that we can find an apartment closeby before we begin the admission process?

I would look into Hidden Oak. There are two Apartments close in walking distance Legacy and the padlock club the later being a little less expensive
Hidden oak is a great school my kids went there and we lovers them. They care about the kids and are on top of things when it comes to health matters. Not that any of the other schools in Gainesville aren't
I just know from personal exp.
The area is great and close to North Florida Regional Medical center and the Mall. Publix and lots of shopping.
There is also a nice park on tower road about 3 miles from there.and a branch of the Alachua Co. Library by the park as well.
There is also the new meadow brook school, I am not sure if that is the correct name... It is right around the corner from Hidden Oak, not sure where the zone neighborhoods are on the new school but the Apts I said are zoned for Hidden oak but always ask just to make sure

Thanks a lot....the lady at our leasing office did suggest meadowbrooks but she has no first hand experience.....any idea when the admissions start?

My kids went to Hidden oak for 5 years, they loved It there

I'm not sure but you can always call the school to see when to get things started.
The website has all the phone numbers.

It says on the website you can go to the school at any time to registrar your kids
Good luck in finding a school
I would go to both schools and see for yourself you might like the new school better, I don't know if any of the teachers that were at Hidden Oak transferred to the new school all I can say is we loved the teachers at Hidden Oak.
Also Talbot is a great school but I don't have first hand info on it.

I believe Meadowbrook has an LPN, not an RN on staff.  That may be sufficient in your situation, I am not sure.  All schools will need to meet his needs, but I would look at Hidden Oak, Talbot, or Littlewood.  You can register now, but you must provide proof of residency.

Thank You....I just called the zoning office and they said our current address is eligible for meadowbrook. But we are not at walking distance. Thanks for the info on the apartment too. Will check it out this weekend.

The admissions start on May 1st. Even for 504 plan that's date they start.

As you suggested, we will check out both the schools. Thank you very much for our prompt response. Do you stay closer to Hidden Oak?

I checked Ledgerdata for school rankings. Hidden Oak is in the lead followed by Talbot. But it is an outdated report.

Too many positives for Hidden Oak. So that's going to be our first choice.

Thanks once again.

Hi Lynn,

The person at the zoning office said admissions start by May 1st. Can we register before that too? I need a nurse to act immediately in case he has a problem with his blood sugars. Should be able to identify the symptoms. He is hypoglycemic.

I thought so, but I would just call the school and ask.  Kindergarten roundup is not until May this year.

My daughter attends Norton Elementary.  My psuedo step daughter just this week got hospitalized and diagnosed with Type ! diabeties so I understand your fears.  Norton has nurse Terri and she is an outstanding nurse.  I had a friend who has 6 children and they too went to Norton.  Two of her six children have type 1 diabeties and nurse Terri took terrific care of my friend's son Matthew with his insulin needs.  Uptown Village is an apartment complex very near by.  It is pretty nice and has a restaurant.

Thanks Kristin. Is uptown at a walkable distance? How is the standard of education?

Walkable? yes but it wouldn't be a nice walk in the cold or rain nor would I would want to walk it everyday.  Standard education - I would say average.  The school got an average grade too.  It was for a lot of years an A school and then a B and then last year it fell to a C but this year there is a new principal

I also really like Norton. My 2 children, one neice and 4 nephews currently go there. It has the feel of a small neighborhood school and all the teachers really look after the kids. Nurse Teri is great. It has a very small zoning area so most of it is in walking distance. There are several apartment comlexes nearby, some that are ony blocks away. However, I believe Uptown Village is zoned for Glen Springs.
