Gainesville Moms

A place for moms to connect

My familiy will be moving to Gainesville this summer from the Tampa area. My son starts kindergarten this year but I am not sure what is the best method for selecting a school. I've looked at the school grade reports but how else can you tell? I'd prefer a school that has had consistently good grades like Wiles, Chiles and Hidden Oak. Of course the school zone will also determine where we look for a house to rent. Any thoughts on schools and neighborhoods would be most welcome. Suggestions for houses/townhouses for rent in July/Aug timeframe to meticulous renters would also be appreciated. Thank you!

Hidden Oak is such an amazing school! My son has been there from K through 5th and my daughter will start the year after next. ALL of the staff and most of the parents work together to make it the best school we possibly can. There are several very nice, safe neighborhoods surrounding Hidden Oak. The ones I personally think are the best are Weatherly, Brookfield, and Legacy apartments if you want to go that route. If you are going to be around and would like a tour let me know I'd be happy to help.
I've heard great things about all the schools you mention. In fact, prior to moving to the area I was also looking very closely at Wiles and Chiles. We ended up going with Talbot though, as there were nice apartments in the area and we just fell in love with that part of town. Talbot is a school that I overlooked when originally looking at schools, but they too have received good marks. The parents are involved, the principal is accessible, and the staff is generally upbeat and pleasant. If you want to know more, please feel free to send me a private message.

As far as rentals go, I would suggest that if you are looking to rent a house you contact a realtor. It would make it much easier to narrow down your search to just the school zone/zones you are looking for.
Looking at school grades is a great start. Since my daughter is still in preschool, I don't really have any personal experience with the schools. But I've heard good things about all the schools you mentioned. I've also heard good thing about Talbot, as Maranda said.

Another option you have is to visit the school. I know you'll be really busy with the move, but you might be able to learn a lot about the school just by touring the campus and possibly sitting in on a class.

Good luck! Hope to meet you and your family when you get to Gainesville!
Thank you everyone for your suggestions. Angela thank you for the info and the offer. My husband started his job in Feb and has an apartment near the mall but it's not something that will work for all of us. I'll be coming up April 2 for the weekend and will take a look around. I'd love to take you up on your offer. Easter is probably not the best weekend but maybe the next time we come up. I'm new to this group and I'm not sure how to send messages outside of this discussion. My email is mlfreymann@gmail.com.

i live in towne parc apts, which are townhouses in sw gainesville. i've lived here almost 6 years and i love it. the community is very quiet and beautifully maintained, and we feel completely safe with our almost- 2 year old. though.... she's still far enough away from school aged that i'm not so sure about this school zone. but, i would recommend this place as far as a great place to live, in a rental, with a child.
