I do agree with a handful of things the dad said. I agree that a child should help around the house that he/she lives in. I also agree that a child should show respect to his/her parents. Do I think the child should have had her laptop taken away? Yes, since she was already warned not to make inappropriate posts on Facebook. HOWEVER, I do think the dad took it too far. He ruined a perfectly good laptop to prove his point. What a waste! And on top of that, he used a gun to prove his point. Seems a bit violent to me. I think this dad has good intentions; he is trying to raise a responsible and respectful daughter. But he took it too far.
Permalink Reply by LittleMonkeysMom on February 14, 2012 at 9:29am I can say here what I wanted to say on Facebook but didn't know the other friends of my friend (they were all very pro-Dad):
I grew up in a house where I felt the same way as this girl appears to be feeling. I was ordered most of the time to do things that, in hindsight, weren't terrible chores but the way my parents went about it was just wrong. Laundry, sweeping and vacuuming, dishes, etc.. yes, they were required of me but it never was like "helping out" is was more like "you do this or else".
My step-mother was a military brat and I absolutely hated her. My father usually deferred to her when it came to us so my brother and I really had no choices.
I specifically remember my dad and step-mother getting into a heated argument in the kitchen which led to coffee grounds and solidified grease from the deep fryer to be flung all over the floor. After they were done fighting I was told to go clean up the kitchen. Yup. THAT was how I grew up so as I was listening to this father online reading his daughters rant and then watching HIS response with several references to her being "lazy" and remarked that the last time she was grounded for 3 months. THREE MONTHS??
I felt some sympathy for the girl because it's evident to me that her father, while being fed up with her, really doesn't seem to be the kind of dad that a girl can come to when she has problems.
I don't condone what the girl did but his response was really sinking down to her level of immaturity and using a GUN to get his point across is just violent, and scary. If THAT'S how he deals with issues when they get out of hand then I wonder what goes on whan a camera isn't on.
Granted we don't know the entire backstory but I really wish that people would stop giving this guy approval because his actions were really over the top. JMO
I also wanna place some bets to see how long it takes for him and his family to be on Dr. Phil. ;)
