A place for moms to connect
When someone in your family has a birthday, do you usually buy or make a birthday cake? We have always bought birthday cakes in the past, but I am thinking about making a cake for my youngest daughter who is turning 2 in a month. We are having a small family cookout to celebrate. :-)

we tend to make cakes. the store bought cakes i've had are always super sugary, dry and rather tasteless. most years it's a box of chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. in between the layers i do peanut butter and m+m's with m+m's on top. it's super easy
my son turns 5 in a few weeks. i'm going to try a gluten/refined sugar free cake recipe i found. he wants chocolate and mint so i'm going to play around with that.

I priced a HALF sheet cake at publix and they wanted 81 dollars for it. It was a disney princess cake. I went to sam's and they had the EXACT same half sheet cake with an additional 32 cupcakes around it for 31 dollars!!! Best cake I've ever had. We only get cakes from there now.

As a kid I have always hated the flavor of store bought bday cake. I agree with PP, too sugary/artificial tasting to me.
Permalink Reply by Barbara Paredes on May 8, 2012 at 5:52pm The best cakes come from actual cake makers here in town like Jenny Wagner or Dream Day Cakes. They are more expensive but I am SO ok with that. They always taste better, taste homemade, personalized COMPLETELY by you, and they don't taste fake like cakes from stores!!! I also get cupcakes and such from places like that...especially for bridal/baby showers and such!

I dislike others because they are so sweet and over done. One of my kids preferred to have pound cake with whipped topping and fruit on top--he doesn't even like traditional cakes at all. Another one doesn't like any frosting at all on hers so her half has no frosting and the other half has frosting for the people who like it. The other one thinks that THE only cake to be had for a birthday is an italian ricotta cheese cake--and if you don't have the family recipe then it isn't the right cake.
Permalink Reply by Cindy on May 8, 2012 at 10:10pm Our youngest son turns 6 tomorrow. I just finished making the school cupcakes to order--chocolate mini cupcakes in gold foil liners with chocolate frosting and a jellybean on top. Part of the fun for our children is being able to help decorate their own cakes, so we always either bake a sheet cake or cupcakes. I figure it is far cheaper and they have a great time making their birthday masterpiece, so it is a win-win.

I like the w/o frosting idea (I hate frosting!) Also the cheese cake and pound cake with whipped topping..mmmm yum.

A great website for cakes and cookies is http://picky-palate.com/. She has so many AMAZING ideas if you are looking for something different.
I bake and I LOVE making cakes for family and friends. My children get to pick their theme and flavors. I LOVE seeing their faces when its their birthday. I grew up with home made cakes decorated with raisons and I'll never forget that. It was specail to me and I know its special to them. I also too a fondont class at Micahaels so that I could do it on my daughters cake one year and that was fun. :)
I always forget that Sam's has a bakery!
